For families

Health insurance for your whole family.

Covering a family is more than picking a plan with a low premium. It is making sure your kids' doctors are in network, your prescriptions are covered, and you are not leaving savings on the table. That is exactly what we do for you, at no cost.

When you're shopping for health insurance for your family, here's something many people don't realize: everyone doesn't have to be on the same plan.

Sometimes an employer plan works well for one parent, but adding the rest of the family is just too expensive. In that case, it may make more sense for the spouse or children to have separate coverage. Depending on your situation, your kids may even qualify for programs like CHIP or Medicaid while the parents have a Marketplace plan.

Every family is different, which is why there's no one-size-fits-all solution.

The goal is to find the right combination of coverage based on your family's needs, your budget, your doctors, and any prescriptions you take. Taking the time to compare your options can make a big difference in both your coverage and your monthly costs.

Where most families start: the Marketplace

For most families an ACA Marketplace plan is the foundation, and a subsidy may lower it more than you expect.

It is comprehensive coverage that cannot deny anyone for a pre-existing condition, it includes pediatric care, and depending on your income you may qualify for a subsidy that lowers what you pay each month, sometimes by a lot.

Covering just your kids

Child-only coverage is a real option, and the first thing to check is whether your state already covers them for less.

Sometimes the parents are already covered and you only need the children insured. That comes up more often than people expect: a parent whose employer plan is affordable for them but expensive for dependents, separated or divorced parents where one is ordered to carry the kids, grandparents or another relative raising a child, or a parent on Medicare with a minor still at home.

You have three paths, and they are not equal. A child-only Marketplace plan is comprehensive, cannot turn a child down for a health condition, and can carry a subsidy. A private or short-term plan can be cheaper for a healthy child bridging a defined gap, but it is medically underwritten and can exclude pre-existing conditions, so it is the wrong tool if there is any ongoing condition. And in many cases the right answer is neither, because the state program covers them for less.

When a private or short-term plan fits

For a healthy family bridging a gap, a short-term plan can help, with eyes open.

Between jobs and need a bridge? A short-term or private plan can fill a gap for a healthy family. We walk you through exactly what they cover and where the gaps are before you decide.

Coverage beyond medical

A family is more than medical coverage, and the gaps are where surprise bills hide.

We can bundle these so your whole family is actually covered, not just medically.

  • Dental and vision are usually separate from medical, and easy to add.
  • Accident coverage helps with the ER bill when a kid breaks an arm, which happens more than parents expect.
  • Life insurance protects the people who depend on your income; a simple term policy often costs less than expected. See our life insurance page.

Common questions

Questions families ask us

Can my kids be denied for a health condition?

Not on an ACA Marketplace plan. Those cannot deny or rate a child for health history, and they cover pediatric care. Private plans work differently, so if you are looking outside the Marketplace we will explain exactly how a plan handles pre-existing conditions before you enroll.

Can I cover just my child?

Yes, and there are three routes, not two. A child-only Marketplace plan is comprehensive and cannot turn a child down for a health condition. A private plan can be cheaper for a healthy child covering a defined gap, but it is medically underwritten. And before either of those we check whether your children qualify for Arizona KidsCare, Alabama ALL Kids, or Texas CHIP, because the income limits reach further than most parents expect and if they qualify it is usually the better deal. We will tell you plainly if that is your situation.

Will my pediatrician still be covered if I switch?

We check before you switch. Confirming your kids' doctors and hospitals are in the plan's network is part of how we shop, so there are no surprises at the front desk.

Is there any cost to having you help our family?

No. The carrier builds the same commission into the premium whether or not you use an agent, so our help is free to you, and we are independent, so we are not paid more to put your family on any one plan.
